ABOUT THE ARTIST

Maria Couto is a Queer Brazilian immigrant, activist, and self-taught photographer primarily located in Chicago, Illinois. Born and raised in Belém, PA, Brazil, Couto spent most of her life in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, which provided her with multiple new experiences and perspectives on the world around her. With a strong passion for Political Science, she sees her pictures as political statements and critiques of the system, with particular attention to Queer and Feminist Theory, class struggles, environmental issues, and international justice.
